Fascial Manipulation – Stecco Method:

Fascial Manipulation (FM) is an evidence-based method of manual-therapy to treat conditions of the myofascial-scelettal system. It was invented over 40 years ago by Luigi Stecco, an Italian physiotherapist. Ever since it’s getting updated with research providing more and more evidence.
The method introduced a biomechanical model that looks at the body as a whole. This model is able to explain how fascia is connected to musculo-scelettal problems and dysfunctions. The focus of FM is to identify and find specific points in the fascia that are directly correlated to impaired movement or pain in joints and muscles. Once the specific point of a painful movement is identified, it gets treated with the fitting manipulation technique in order to relief the pain and restore full range of motion.

The basic idea of Fascial Manipulation is that connective tissue (also known as fascia) forms a 3-dimensional continuum around the muscles, bones and joints of the human body. This innovative biomechanical model offers a complete and functional explanation to the complex system of the fascia. Many scientific research papers are in line with the model that Stecco introduced. Histology as well as imaging studies have backed the hypotheses about the function of the deep fascial in regards to motor-control. Dissections on untreated cadavers at the University of Padua, Italy have brought further understandings. All these attribute to explain how the different techniques that are used on the superficial and deep fascia have an effect micro- and macroscopically.

 

 Since 1988 the biomechanical model of FM and its application as well as all further research have helped in the developement of fascial anatomy.
The exact evaluation process leads the therapist to the region of dysfunctional fascia that needs manipulation in order to restore balance in the human body.
